The Value of Self-Care: A Journey Through Personal Growth




As a woman in her early 30s, I found myself learning to navigate life during a time where everyone talked about “self-care,” but it mostly equated to expensive activities that felt out of reach. I struggled to prioritize my own well-being, believing that valuable self-care was reserved for those who could afford spa visits, lavish vacations, and pricey activities. This misconception led me down a path of neglecting my mental health, until the summer and fall of 2018 hit me like a ton of bricks.


During that time, I experienced severe mental health challenges that required multiple rounds of intensive therapy just to find my baseline again. It was a wake-up call. Through working with one of my therapists, I learned the importance of having a crisis plan—a lifeline to turn to when things feel overwhelming.


This plan, meticulously crafted with my therapist, opened my eyes to the value of recognizing when I'm not feeling my best and having a support system in place to help me through those times. In 2019, that plan became my guiding light, helping me navigate life's ups and downs with greater ease and resilience.


Over the years, my crisis plan has evolved to better suit my needs as I journey through personal growth. It's become more than just a list of activities and people to turn to—it's a roadmap to self-discovery and self-compassion.


I am incredibly grateful for the insights and tools that the crisis plan has provided me. In fact, I've taken it upon myself to create my own version of this plan, tailored to my unique experiences and needs, and I've found immense comfort in knowing that I have a plan in place for when life throws its curveballs.
